Discover how the Tween Empowerment Project at Lynne Duval Photography is helping young girls find their voices, embrace their individuality, and recognize the incredible strength they already have within them.
There is a beautiful, complicated stage in a young girl's life when she is no longer a little girl, but not quite a teenager. It's a time filled with change, self-discovery, new friendships, and growing independence.
It's also a time when girls may begin questioning themselves, comparing themselves to others, and wondering where they fit in.
As a portrait photographer, I've always believed that photography is about so much more than capturing a beautiful image. It's about preserving a moment in time, celebrating individuality, and helping people see themselves in a way they may never have before.
That's why I created the Tween Empowerment Project at Lynne Duval Photography.
I wanted to create an experience where girls could come together, build meaningful friendships, explore their strengths, and discover the power of being themselves.
An experience where they could feel celebrated, supported, and encouraged to embrace everything that makes them unique.
And, of course, I wanted to capture that journey through beautiful portraits that they and their families could treasure for generations.
The Tween Empowerment Project is a yearlong photography and personal growth experience designed specifically for girls between the ages of 9 and 12.
Throughout the year, our ambassadors come together for seasonal portrait sessions and empowerment activities that encourage confidence, positive self-image, self-expression, courage, and connection.
Each session focuses on a different theme, giving the girls opportunities to explore who they are, what makes them special, and how they can navigate the challenges of growing up.
We talk about important topics such as finding their voices, setting healthy boundaries, recognizing their strengths, celebrating their individuality, and supporting one another.
But this isn't a classroom.
It's an interactive, creative experience where the girls can laugh, have fun, express themselves, and build friendships in a supportive environment.
And the photography is an important part of that experience.
During our portrait sessions, I encourage each girl to express her personality, explore her creativity, and participate in creating images that reflect who she truly is.
Whether she's dancing, laughing with friends, wearing her favorite outfit, or confidently looking into the camera, every photograph becomes part of her story.
This year, I had the pleasure of welcoming five wonderful girls into our inaugural Tween Empowerment Ambassador Program.
Each girl brings her own personality, interests, talents, and perspective to our group.
Some are outgoing and adventurous. Others are thoughtful, creative, or a little more reserved. They all have different strengths, and that's exactly what makes this experience so special.
One of my favorite parts of the program has been watching the girls encourage one another.
During our sessions, I've seen them help each other get ready, suggest creative poses, celebrate each other's ideas, and find ways to bring out one another's personalities.
They are learning that confidence doesn't mean being the loudest person in the room or having all the answers.
Sometimes confidence means trying something new, asking for help, standing up for yourself, or simply being comfortable with who you are.
And sometimes, it means helping someone else find her confidence, too.
We began our journey in January with a winter-themed portrait session and an empowerment activity focused on the power of words.
Each girl explored a word that represented her inner strength and reflected on what that word meant to her.
The activity encouraged the girls to recognize positive qualities within themselves and consider how those strengths could help them navigate challenges.
Afterward, we moved into our portrait session, where the girls had an opportunity to express their personalities and enjoy being photographed.
It was a wonderful beginning to our year together and an opportunity for the girls to start getting to know one another.
As our program continued, we explored the importance of individuality, positive self-image, and recognizing the qualities that make each person special.
Our portrait sessions gave the girls opportunities to experiment with different outfits, props, expressions, and poses.
Rather than asking them to fit into a particular mold, I encouraged them to bring their own ideas into the creative process.
For me, one of the most meaningful parts of photographing tweens is seeing what happens when they realize that they don't have to look or act like anyone else to create a beautiful portrait.
Their individuality is what makes the image special.
During one of our recent sessions, we focused on something incredibly important: finding your voice.
We talked about how having a voice is about much more than speaking loudly.
It's about knowing that your thoughts, feelings, and opinions matter.
The girls explored situations they might encounter at school, with friends, in group chats, and in everyday life.
We discussed the importance of asking for help, saying no, expressing feelings, setting boundaries, standing up for others, and knowing when to walk away and find a trusted adult.
We also talked about the differences between passive, aggressive, and assertive communication.
Although we didn't get through everything I had planned, the girls were having so much fun during their portrait session that I decided we would continue the activity at our next gathering.
And that's one of the things I love about this program.
There is room for meaningful conversations, but there is also room for laughter, spontaneity, creativity, and simply enjoying being a kid.
The girls had a wonderful time choosing outfits, incorporating props, helping one another get ready, and coming up with their own creative ideas.
Watching them express themselves so freely was a reminder of exactly why I started this project.
One of the special experiences I have planned for our ambassadors is an affirmation project.
Parents will have an opportunity to gather meaningful stories and encouraging words from people who know and love their daughters, including family members, teachers, coaches, grandparents, and other important people in their lives.
These words will be incorporated into a special presentation alongside the girls' portraits.
My hope is that each girl will have an opportunity to see herself through the eyes of the people who care about her.
To recognize the kindness others see in her.
The courage she may not realize she has.
The difference she makes in someone else's life.
And the wonderful qualities that make her uniquely herself.
We all have moments when we struggle to recognize our own strengths. Sometimes, hearing how we have positively impacted someone else can help us see ourselves from a different perspective.
I want these girls to have something they can return to when they need a reminder of how loved, valued, and appreciated they are.
Think about all the photographs we take of our children when they're little.
We document their first steps, birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and countless everyday moments.
Then, as they get older, life becomes busier.
Before we know it, we're scheduling senior portraits and wondering where the years have gone.
But what about the years in between?
The years when our daughters are discovering their interests, developing their personalities, building friendships, and beginning to understand who they are?
These years deserve to be celebrated, too.
A tween portrait session gives families an opportunity to pause and appreciate this chapter of their daughter's life.
It's a chance to capture the little details that make her who she is today, from her favorite outfit and infectious laugh to her unique expressions and growing confidence.
And when those portraits become beautiful printed artwork displayed in your home, they become a daily reminder that she is seen, loved, and celebrated.
Years from now, those photographs will tell the story of a young girl who was discovering herself and becoming the person she is today.
At the end of our year together, we will celebrate our ambassadors with a special gala where they can invite their families and friends to share in their experience.
The evening will feature their portraits and celebrate the friendships, personal discoveries, and memories they have made throughout the program.
I want each girl to look back at her photographs and remember not only what she looked like, but also how she felt during the experience.
The laughter.
The friendships.
The excitement of trying something new.
The pride of accomplishing something she wasn't sure she could do.
And, most importantly, the understanding that she has something valuable to contribute to the world simply by being herself.
As a mother, you know how quickly your daughter is growing up.
You see the changes happening right before your eyes. Her interests are evolving, her friendships are becoming more important, and she's beginning to develop her own ideas about who she is and who she wants to become.
The Tween Empowerment Project is an opportunity to celebrate her during this important stage of life.
It's an experience that encourages her to recognize her strengths, embrace her individuality, build positive connections, and discover the power of her own voice.
And through beautiful, professionally created portraits, you'll have a lasting reminder of this special chapter in her life.
Because she doesn't have to wait until she's older to be celebrated. She deserves to be seen, valued, and appreciated for exactly who she is today.
I am excited to welcome a new group of girls into our 2027 Tween Empowerment Program!
